When You Must Dine on “Fast Food”

June 28th, 2008

I am one of the fortunate few who get to work from a home-office most days of the year. Because of the nature of my work, my physical location is not important to the task at hand. As such, I also have the opportunity to better control my food choices and eating habits during the work day. If you are in this category, be thankful that you are because — for most people — it is much more difficult to eat well during the work day.

Sometimes, however, my work requires my physical presence in the office — often for many days at a time. This week was such a week. Yesterday, as lunch time came and went, the pangs of hunger began to gnaw at me and I finally decided to run over to the local McDonalds for some lunch. Since I was very hungry, I reminded myself to order thoughtfully.

When those of us fighting the Battle of the Bulge are visiting a fast food restaurant, there are some really obvious things that we must do to avoid overeating and/or choosing the wrong kinds of food. These “obvious” things include to not order anything that is “deep fat fried” and to not “super-size” any order. It struck me, though, as I sat there “inhaling” my cheeseburger, that there are many other things that we can do that will also help prevent over-consumption of the wrong kinds of foods.

The first thing to consider is what you drink. Most fast food companies will provide “ice water” at no charge when you are making a food purchase. Not only can you save some money, but you can drink more water (please see the www.weeklyweightlosstips.com archives to read more on drinking water), which is something that you already know to do. Many wise fast food restaurants are also selling your favorite brands of bottled water, which can typically be refilled at the beverage kiosk if you are still thirsty when you finish your meal.

Not only is this important when comparing beverage choices (e.g., soda vs. water), but also when you consider the fact that fast food contains much more salt than what we typically would use on our own food at home. If you have been reading these articles for some time now, you have likely read some compelling reasons why we need to limit our sodium intake. Sodium causes us to retain water (which weighs about seven pounds per gallon) and the only way to safely regulate this (sodium and water retention) is to drink more and more water.

The next thing to consider is the condiments. Many fast food restaurants are suggesting salads as a low-calorie option to their traditional offerings. These are a great way to avoid higher fat, lower fiber alternatives, but with salads the dressing must be scrutinized, or else you may end up not saving calories at all. Dieticians suggest choosing the dressing type wisely, as well they recommend using the smallest amount possible.

If you order items other than salads, the same thing is true. Mayonnaise if a very high-fat food that should be avoided. Most restaurants will allow you to “special order” a small amount of your condiments (”light on the mayo, please…”) or just those that are lower in fat and calories. Mustard is a low fat, low calorie condiment, though it may not be suited to everyone’s individual taste.

The last thing that I would recommend that you keep in mind when visiting a “fast food” restaurant is to not get wrapped up in the “speediness” of the environment. One of the worst dining habits is to eat your meals quickly. The very nature of the fast food shop makes it difficult to slow down and enjoy your meal. Make a conscious effort to sit down, relax, and savor every bite. Don’t allow yourself to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the surroundings. When you sit down at the table with your food, tell yourself that you are going to eat slowly, savoring your food, or you are likely to eat too quickly and too much.

You may not always be able to avoid eating at a fast food restaurant, so when you must do so, prepare yourself before you get in line to order. Don’t let your hunger cause you to over-order, make wise food and beverage choices, and when you eat, take time to savor your food. Following this advice will keep you on track for a lighter, healthier you!

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #47

May 28th, 2008

I’m always so in awe of the synchronicity of things. When we let things happen as God intended and not try to put our energy on the outcome or how things are “supposed” to show up, we let the Universe do its wonderful job in providing all the things to move us forward with our mission here on earth. We then have signs that illustrate that everything is aligned as it should be.

This past week I attended an Emmanuel Apostolic Church and what an experience I had. For several years now, I had felt a pull towards this church but didn’t know why. I kept thinking I have to visit this church, but then never took the action steps toward attending it.

Let me tell you about my experience. Upon arriving as a new person, I am greeted with such a warmth and love that it filled me with tears. I am then given a program and I notice the picture of the Eagle which is on the program. I asked the pastor’s wife if the Eagle is always on the cover of the program and she said, “No, we change it every week.” I open the program and it illustrates their celebration of Black History Month and the topic for that day was “health.” I said a little prayer to God thanking Him for guiding me here.

What does all this mean?

The Eagle is my guide and has a huge significance for me. I’ve written about the Eagle in my book, Wake UpLive the Life You Love Finding Personal Freedom. Within the past week I was visiting a friend and there were two Eagles in their nest just outside her house. On the way home, I saw two Eagles flying within a few miles of each other. I then drive up my street and my neighbor had her binoculars out looking at the tree by our respective houses with an Eagle sitting in the nest. Incredible, right?

As I listened to the speakers at the church, there was no doubt in my mind why I was there. The speakers discussed health and the illnesses that plague African Americans disproportionately as compared to other ethnic groups. The statistics they quoted were quite alarming. They mentioned heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The speakers told the congregation that lifestyle changes are necessary in order to become intentional in creating vibrant health.

You can imagine how I was feeling at this time and why I was there. For years, I’ve visualized me speaking to the masses about health. Here was an opportunity to help this group overcome their adverse statistics and paint a different picture for them.

I like the phrase, “Go BIG, or go home!”

I did meet with the pastor and told him my intent and how I was going to help his congregation. He looked at me in awe when I presented him with this information as he mentioned that prior to our meeting he spoke with three of his parishioners expressing the need for better nutrition and health. Synchronicity? Absolutely!

Do I know all the details of how this is going to be accomplished? No, I don’t. I just know that I’m supposed to do it and the resources and the people will show up. I know it!

What does this mean for you?

You have a mission to complete on this earth. When you are out of balance with your health, you’re so focused on not feeling good that it distracts you from your God-given assignment. You must become intentional about your health.

I remember what I wrote down years ago after reading Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield’s book, Dare to Win. In this book, you are asked to write down your objective in life and here’s what I wrote:

My purpose in life is to empower all people to teach them about health issues to realize they are responsible for their own well-being.

I wrote this down after I had gotten myself well from an illness where I was bedridden. I went through that experience so I would understand what it feels like to have poor health and then to align myself with everything that was going to help me get well. Then years later I gained weight and lost it using all the components of my weight loss program, including the products from Isagenix.

Poor health and being overweight is not where God intends us to be. Let me help guide you to better health. It is possible to feel enthusiasm for life.

Think of me as your sign that is showing up for you. What would it feel like to have support to help you and to know you’re not alone?

Remember what Oprah says, “We don’t do anything by ourselves. We must have support in order to succeed.”

Love and hugs,

Helping you fall in love…with yourself

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #48

May 23rd, 2008

Giving our burdens to God is the simplest thing we ever have to do. We don’t need to worry about all the details and how things are going to show up for us. It is that faith which Divinely guides us in our next step of action.

How often though do we give ourselves over to God’s loving embrace?

Did you know that things show up for us in the form of intuition, ideas, people, books? Sometimes we get disillusioned as we believe it’s supposed to be in the form we want it to be.

I asked for money, where is it? I asked for a better relationship, where is it? I asked for better health, where is it?

Guess what?

God always delivers. He knows exactly what you need, and the mustard seed is planted.
The harvest is here when God believes you are ready.

We do get impatient while we’re waiting for the harvest. We want to hurry up and dig up the seed to ensure it’s growing. We work ourselves with worry wondering if that seed will ever produce our abundance and prosperity. What we don’t see is the miracle that is taking place underneath the ground to deliver our bountiful harvest. The Universe, in its intelligence, is cultivating the right environment.

Sometimes the answer is right in front of us, but we miss the opportunity.

When we let go of the outcome, we let God and the Universe do the work. We have planted the seed. Our only job now is to be grateful that things are evolving exactly as they should and the delivery date is right here, right now.

God intends that we are joyful in every moment, regardless of our “perception” of our circumstances.

Trust in yourself. When you trust in yourself, you trust in the wisdom that created you.

How does this relate to your health and weight loss?

It is no accident that you are reading this. It is no accident that you have subscribed to this newsletter. You are right where you need to be.

You only need to ask yourself one question.

Is this the answer I’ve been looking for?

I don’t know if I’m your answer. I don’t know if I’m exactly what you need. What I do know is that God intends me to help people with their health, simply and beautifully.

Let me see if I can help you make your decision.

Just recently, I was faced with a decision in leasing commercial space in a healing center in Silverdale, Washington. I had heard a strong message that I was supposed to get out in the community more, but I didn’t ask to lease space. I have been doing my energy and weight loss practice from my home. The landlord, who was leasing the space, called and said she had seen my flyer for my weight loss program and Isagenix products so I thought she was calling me to help her.

No, she was calling me to see if I wanted to lease space.

So I closed my eyes and said, “Okay, God, if this is really meant for me, I want a zebra to come running through my living room. Then I’ll know it’s really from You.”

Now, this seems pretty silly, but I sure was going through some of this self-talk and also putting my fingers over my eyes and saying, “When I open my eyes, I want you to send me a clear sign that this is what you mean by getting out in the community more.”

There was no zebra! No black and white of anything!

I then called a friend asking for assistance with my decision who said these words, “How many more people can you help if you are more visible in the public?”

This is exactly what I needed to hear and I made my decision to lease the space. It’s been a very spiritual experience, but you want to know something? It’s what I have envisioned for many years. I could picture myself doing this.

When Arnold Swarzennager was interviewed asking how an immigrant could possibly be Governor of California, this was his response. I pictured myself doing this and now I’m just living that picture.

What are you picturing for yourself?

We miss opportunities because we don’t want to believe that God provides in ways that we don’t quite expect. We miss opportunities because we focus on the lack of money in order to take that step in faith.

God always provides and remember it may not be in the form that we expected. Did you know your salary at your job is only a channel; it is not your Source. Your abundance only comes from one Source and He sends it to you through many different channels.

Hopefully, I’ve helped you. Make the decision that is right for you.

Choose to have abundant health. I can show you how.
